Exhibition & Events: Signage & Promotional Items

We love exhibitions & events here at Firpress! We recently worked with Armstrong Watson on their promotional items & products for their stand at The Cumberland Show.

Items included a customised kids goodie pack holder made from correx for the centre of the tables. Each of these contained personalised Armstrong Watson mini colouring books, which were printed digitally on our digital press! Promotional signage for the event, mini product tags for the toy tractors they were handing out and also a really unique large cow jigsaw! Produced from gloss vinyl prints mounted onto foam ex, these jigsaws went down a storm at the event! A real crowd pleaser!

Edge of Empire: Roman Themed Historical Story Boards

Firpress were delighted to be involved in the Edge of Empire project. In association with Community Rail Cumbria and Cumbria County Council, we were tasked with designing a series of 9 Historical story boards based around the Roman heritage of Cumbria. We worked closely with Warren Birch of Community Rail Cumbria to develop the design & theme for the storyboards, our talented Graphic Designer Christie was tasked with developing the design and creating an eye-catching and informative series of storyboards which would be accessible to all ages.

Each board was individually designed around the individual board topic, Christie used a combination of imagery and key facts to create easier to read sections. This was a really fun & interesting project to work on and we were delighted with the outcome.

The final story boards were printed onto aluminium dibond, mounted onto 15mm foamex with brackets to attach them to the wooden posts.

Regeneration projects transform Maryport railway station

A three-year programme of regeneration works which have transformed Maryport railway station has been celebrated by Community Rail Cumbria in partnership with Cumbria County Council.

Following the investment of £1.2million to create a spacious car park at the front of the station, Maryport Transport Hub provides wide-ranging benefits such as free car-parking, safe access and improved signage. The hub aims to encourage people to travel by train along the Cumbrian Coast.

In addition to this significant development, Northern Rail committed to major platform refurbishment works, including removal of vegetation, excavation and laying of foundations for new shelter, platform resurfacing, improved drainage, shelter lighting and customer information screens.

Now a unique community initiative called ‘The Edge of Empire’, which complements the station improvements, has been unveiled by the Cumbrian Coast Community Rail Partnership (CRP).

Recognising that Maryport began life as a prominent outpost on Rome’s Northern frontier, the ‘Edge of Empire’ project integrates an authentic Roman theme on the station. The area’s rich Roman heritage is now retold in compelling storyboards installed on the station platform which illustrate and celebrate the importance of the town’s Roman history in a modern rail-based setting.

Thanks to funding and support from the national Association for Community Rail Partnerships and the Department for Transport, the ‘Edge of Empire’ project has transformed the railway station from a neglected and overgrown wilderness into an ‘outdoor classroom’ which encourages visitors and local schoolchildren to explore further the hidden histories surrounding Rome’s occupation in Cumbria.

The CRP has welcomed local volunteer group, The Maryporters, who have adopted the station and will play an important part in developing the Roman theme even further. The group will tend the station and work with the CRP to develop future plans to enhance the facilities.

Cllr Keith Little, Cumbria County Council Cabinet member for Transport, cut a ribbon to mark the official opening of the ‘Edge of Empire’ project on the station platform on Monday, watched by pupils from Flimby Primary School.

Cllr Little said: “These projects have completely transformed Maryport station, making it much easier and more attractive for our businesses, residents and visitors to travel by train, as well as boosting the local economy. Maryport station is now a welcoming, modern transport gateway which the local community can be proud of.”

CRP Chairman, Laurence Hilland said: “The regeneration of Maryport railway station into a vibrant, well-used transport hub is a very welcome development on the Cumbrian Coast railway. The ‘Edge of Empire’ project has transformed the railway station and perfectly illustrates the value of robust partnership working and strong links with the local authority. Collaborating with Cumbria County Council has culminated in significant benefits for the Maryport community. We’re already getting a fantastic reaction to the Roman theme which shows railway stations can be so much more than just places to wait for a train.”

A spokesperson for Northern Rail said: “Maryport railway station is now firmly on the map!  Northern is keen to encourage modal shift amongst local employers such as Sellafield and generally improve the quality of the facilities at stations.  We are proud to have been able to support this uniquely innovative scheme which will encourage more people to use the railway and has brought such positive benefits to the community of Maryport.”

Work Experience: Ollie

Ollie joined Firpress this week from Keswick School for his Work Experience. 

During his week Ollie worked in the Design Studio alongside our Graphic Design team, who set him several briefs to work on. One brief Ollie worked on was to create some pump clip designs for some imaginative new beers for The Tractor Shed (Ollie’s family business).

The final designs he created were amazing, we have shared some images of them below.

Ollie also worked closely with Rob our production manager on the RYOBI press, setting up jobs for print, checking them and also running the machine to print the final print run. Our finishing team showed Ollie all the different machinery we use to produce our finished jobs, such as the guillotine, folder and stitcher. Ollie even jumped in to the delivery van to go on a local delivery run with Claire. 

Ollie has a real eye for design and we were really impressed with everything he produced during his time here. We asked him a few questions about his work experience week, have a read of his answers below:

What did you think working in a design/print studio would be like before you started your work experience?
I really had no idea what it would be like at Firpress.

Which part of working at Firpress have you enjoyed the most & why? 
The design studio because it is a very chill environment and I like that I got to be independent. I also liked going on the press as much as the design studio, as I learned a lot and it gave a sense of achievement.

Which jobs have you enjoyed working on the most? (Tell us a little bit about them below)
I enjoyed the Tractor Shed design as it was good to design something that is for the family business and  I am familiar with the client and the designs currently used.

What have you learned whilst you have been here at Firpress?
One of the things that I learnt was that when printing you have to  make sure that all the colours line up

Have you enjoyed your time here at Firpress?
Yes it was very interesting and the time went by very quickly. 

Do you think you would pursue a career in Graphic Design in the future?
Graphics is definitely an option but I am still uncertain whether I will pursue it.

WORK EXPERIENCE WEEK

Leon joined us at Firpress this week for his work experience placement! He worked in the studio alongside our design team, assisted Rob our Production Manager with some printing work and also helped in the finishing department making booklets and finishing jobs.

We asked him a few questions about his time here at Firpress…

What did you think working in a design/print studio would be like before you started your work experience?
I thought it would be an office area with lots of computers for people to work and design on.

Which part of working at Firpress have you enjoyed the most & why?
I enjoyed working in the Design Studio the most, because you get to be more creative and imaginative.

Which jobs have you enjoyed working on the most?
Printing because it’s really interesting to learn about how the machine works and it helps me gain experience in case I decide to go into the same or a similar industry.

What have you learned whilst you have been here at Firpress?
I have learnt the full process of printing such as how it’s designed, printed, finished and packaged.

How did you find your hands on experience working with Rob on the RYOBI printing press?
It was really fun and enjoyable. I enjoyed learning about how the machine works and what to do to operate it.

Have you enjoyed your time here at Firpress?
Yes, it’s flew by and it’s been very enjoyable.

Do you think you would pursue a career in Graphic Design in the future?
Probably because my time here has really encouraged me to persue careers in Graphic Design because it has shown me how much fun it is, also it would also be beneficial because it’s something I enjoy.

Firpress opened their doors in 1985 and have been providing a quality printing service to businesses throughout Cumbria for over 30 years. THE ROLE 

Our ideal candidate will have a passion and a creative flair for design, be able to use their own initiative and work effectively alongside our existing team. Communication is a big part of the job, so you must feel confident enough to contribute to the entire creative process – from initial briefs, to creating artwork, preparing for print and finishing – cradle to grave! 

This is a highly diverse role – every day will be different! You will be working across various projects; logo design, invitations, posters, brochures, business stationery, menus, leaflets, banners, exhibition displays, wedding stationery, labels, large format and much more… 

SKILLS REQUIRED 

• BA Hons in Graphic Design desired (minimum qualification HND in Graphic Design)* 

• Working experience of the Adobe Suite including InDesign, Photoshop & Illustrator.

Woodland Trust

Woodland Carbon is a scheme created by the Woodland Trust, the UK’s leading woodland conservation charity, to plant more trees in the UK. 🌳

Between October & December 2018 Firpress helped create 322.50m² of new native woodland in the UK to remove 12,900kg of Carbon Dioxide.

Join Our Team: Print Finisher (Full Time)

Firpress is looking for a hard-working individual to join our busy print finishing department.

DUTIES TO INCLUDE:

• Operation of print finishing machinery including: guillotine, booklet making, machine folding, industrial lamination and other pieces of automated machinery

• Sign making on a variety of medium including: vinyl, dibond, correx & foamex

• Finishing of pvc banners and pop up display systems

• Hand work to finish and package our printed products

• Preparation of pallets or boxes for courier despatch

• Monitor stock levels

SKILLS & ATTRIBUTES:

• Be methodical and well-organised

• Have excellent mechanical and problem-solving skills

• Work to a high degree of accuracy, even when working to a deadline

• Pay close attention to detail

• Have good communication skills

• Be able to follow instructions closely to achieve the right result

• Have a calm manner and work well under pressure

• Be a good team player

• Experience preferred, not essential as full training will be given

• Full Driving Licence required
